A fluid-tight sealing device for concentric pipe sections 10, 12 comprises a sealing ring 19 of rubber or the like housed in a groove 13 formed in the first pipe 12, the opening 15 of the groove facing the second pipe 10, and the ring being capable of radial displacement in the groove between a retracted position, Fig. 2, and a sealing position, Fig. 2a, and a tightening member 20 to displace the sealing ring from the retracted to the sealing position and to compress it so as to privide fluid tightness. An opening 18 is formed in the outer surface of the pipe section 12 and receives a stirring 22 which fits its ends 23 as shown in Fig. 3. One end of the member 20, which may be piano wire, cable, hoop-iron, nylon cord or other tensioning material, is attached to the stirrup as at 21 and the member 20 is wound at least twice round the outer circumference of the sealing ring and its other end is pulled by a force F, after which the extremity 24 is fixed to the stirrup 22 by any suitable means. The outside of the ring 19 is covered by a protective strip 26 of canvas, cardboard or other suitable material. Under the tightening action the material of the sealing ring 19 is displaced until it reaches the oppositely-facing surface of the pipe 10 and is compressed to form rolls 19a which ensure fluid-tight sealing. Another form of the tightening member 20, Fig. 5, to a strap with slots 30 in its ends, which are enabled to slide by the interposition of the base of a U- piece 29 between them and the plastic sealing ring 19. A tightening device 32 is used which has two claws 31 that are inserted in two of the slots 30 and then drawn towards one another by the action of opposite-handed screw threads 33, and return movement is prevented by pushing a staple 28 into two appropriate slots.
