Abstract

1361185 Pipe couplings MEARS CONSTRUCTION Ltd 10 Dec 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 46450/70 Heading F2G In order to prevent a spigot and socket pipe joint from being pulled apart, during pipe-laying, the adjoining ends are secured together by straps 21 extending, under tension, between hoops 18, 19, which are held apart by projections on the pipes. An abutment ring 15 may be adhesively secured to a rigid plastics pipe 11 and limits the depth to which the bevelled end 13 penetrates into socket 12. The socket has a reinforcing layer 14, which serves as an abutment for hoop 18. The steel straps 21 may be doubled under hoop 19 and have their ends welded together at 22. The straps may alternatively be of polypropylene or the steel parts 18, 19 and 21 may be coated with plastics. When the towing resistance is high, wire ropes may additionally extend throughout the length of the pipe-line (Figs. 2-4, not shown).
