Abstract

968,974. Winding plurality of strands on tubes. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Aug. 12, 1963 [Nov. 13, 1962], No. 31717/63. Heading D1J. A plurality of strands are wound upon a single tube and are traversed in such manner that the strands alternately cross and are laterally spaced from each other in the form of a repeated figure of eight. Two multifilament glass strands 26, 28 pass, one in front of and one behind a rotating traverse roller 36 to a winding tube 20. The traverse roller 36 has two oppositely handed cam portions each extending approximately 180 degrees around the roller (Figs. 4-7, not shown), which serve to distribute the strands in the repeated crossover relation shown. Distribution of the thus laid strands over the axial length of the tube 20 is achieved by causing either the tube 20 or the roller 36 or both to reciprocate in relation to each other, The relative rotational speeds of the roller and tube are selected to ensure that the strands cross at a substantial angle to each other. The crossover winding pattern is stated to prevent adhesion of one strand to the other and to facilitate unwinding.
