Abstract
967,650. Rod making machines. D. T. N. WILLIAMSON, D. W. B MUIR, and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. July 10, 1963 [July 11, 1962], No 26680/62. Heading A2C. [Also in Division B5] In a continuous rod making machine wherein a wrapper of e.g. cigarette paper web is folded over a filler, an ultrasonic vibratory device has a part positioned between the filler and overlapping wrapper portions and co-operates with another member to weld the overlapping wrapper portions together. A paper web 3, Fig. 3, carrying a filler is conveyed on tape 2 through U-shaped trough 1. Positioned above trough 1 is an ultrasonic vibratory device in the form of a mechanical impedance transformer having a coupler the lower surface of which has a longitudinal arcuate groove specially shaped towards the downstream end 8 of the coupler to act as a compression tongue for the filler. Positioned above the downstream end of the coupler are two guide parts 9 and 10 (Fig. 4) shaped to guide the edge portions of the paper web 3 into overlapping relationship to enclose the filler and to bear against the upper surface of the downstream end 8 of the coupler (Fig. 2). Immediately above end 8 of the coupler 5 is an aperture 14 in guide part 10 through which projects a narrow rectangular surface 16, of member 15, which bears against the overlapping paper web edges whilst the coupler end 5 executes ultrasonic vibrations to weld the edges together. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3 not shown) an ultrasonic mechanical impedance transformer is suitably positioned immediately upstream of the guide part and is provided with a tip attached to the coupler which performs the same operation as coupler end 8 in the first embodiment.
