Abstract

<PICT:0966532/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0966532/C6-C7/2> Rod-like articles (e.g. cigarettes or drinking straws) are made by folding a web of material (e.g. paper) into a rod shape so that portions of the overlap and joining the overlapping portions by means of ultrasonic vibratory welding to form a seam running lengthwise of the rod. A tobacco filler is carried on a web, Fig. 1, having side edges 2, 3 on a conveyer tape 4 through a U-shaped channel. Compression tongue 7 compresses the tobacco filler as it passes along the conveyer tape. Guide parts 10, 11 positioned above tongue 7 have specially contoured guide edges 12, 13 which urge the ends of the paper web into overlapping relationship against the outer surface of part 9 of tongue 7 in which position the ends are maintained by stationary guide 14, Fig. 3. An ultrasonic vibratory welding device comprising a mechanical impedance transformer formed by transducer 17 connected to coupler 18 has a shaped welding tip 19 which projects through a hole 16 in guide 14 and acts on the overlapping paper edges as they pass beneath the hole 16 and welds them together against part 9 of the tongue 7 to form a seam 20 running lengthwise of the continuous rod 21. Tip 19 may be of metal or diamond or sapphire with a roughened surface, also the paper web may be dampened before welding and may have a china clay additive. In a further embodiment the tongue 7 is arranged to vibrate with ultrasonic frequency the member 14 serving as the member against which the paper edge portions are welded together.
