Abstract

Latex modified portland cement mortar or concrete compositions have the polymeric solids of the latex consisting of a polymer or copolymer of vinylidene chloride and, when acrylonitrile is present, less than 10% of the total polymer solids consist of acrylonitrile. Examples of suitable polymers are given. The composition may also contain at least 0.4% anti-foaming agent, e.g. a 10% solids emulsion of dimethyl siloxane with 4% silica aerogel emulsified therein by anionic or cationic emulsifying agents and/or 0.1-10% diethylene or triethylene glycol as a humectant. Aggregates, e.g. 200-300%, may be sand, stone, gravel, pebbles, granite, carborundum, aluminium oxide, emery, marble chips, sawdust, cinders, asbestos, mica, talc, flint or manufactured particles such as powdered ceramic material. The composition may also include, e.g. gypsum, plaster of Paris, calcium sulphate, lime or magnesium oxychloride as binders. Specification 963,296 is referred to.
