Abstract

Structural elements, such as bricks, blocks, lintels and tiles, comprise a hardened mixture of (a) a granular aggregate composed wholly or substantially of siliceous material, and (b) a bonding material composed of at least 7.5 wt. per cent, based on the total mixture, of silica flour of which at least 90 wt. per cent passes a 300 mesh British Standard sieve, and 5-10 wt. per cent, based on the total mixture and calculated as Ca(OH)2, of one or more of hydrated lime, quick lime and spent calcium carbide The aggregate may be siliceous sand, rock, or quarry material, e.g. basalt, gritstone, crushed granite, river bed sand, or china clay waste sand, and may contain micaceous material and naturally occurring mineral matter and/or ferruginous material. Non-micaceous aggregates may have mica added artificially. The mixture may contain a pigment, e.g. a naturally coloured igneous or sedimentary material, or an ochre, umber or sienna. The structural elements are made by moulding the mixture to the desired shape, if necessary using water as a temporary binder, and hardening the shaped mixture by a high-pressure steam treatment, optionally preceded by an atmospheric pressure steam treatment.
