Abstract
1,260,469. Bituminous materials. ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO. Ltd. 28 March, 1969 [3 April, 1968], No. 16108/68. Heading C3N. [Also in Division C1] Artificial roadstone for bituminous surfacing compositions is made from a mixture comprising water, a bonding material which constitutes 5-100 wt. per cent of the solids in said mixture and passes a No. 100 mesh and optionally a -# + 100 mesh by extruding the mixture through holes of maximum width #-2 inches, dividing the extruded mixture into lengths of #-2 inches, and hardening the divided lengths. Suitable bonding materials are Portland cement, high alumina cement, mixtures of silica flour, e.g. as slate powder or ball clay, with lime, e.g. hydrated lime, quick lime or spent calcium carbide, and mixtures of these. Suitable aggregates are slags, clinker, basalt, flint, gabbro, granite, gritstone, hornfels, limestone, porphyry, quartzite, schist and sand from china clay extraction. The mixture is extruded through holes of circular, rectangular, triangular or diamond section and hardened with steam, e.g. at above 100 p.s.i.g., or at ambient conditions if containing high alumina cement. In an example the roadstones are coated with 2 wt. per cent bitumen having a penetration at 25‹ C. of 60 and 2% of limestone and rolled into a road surface made from 25% coarse rock aggregate, 57% of sand, 10% of limestone filler and 8% of bitumen.
