A blowing device for a converter comprises a plurality of lances arranged to be lowered one at a time into and raised out of the converter along a guide comprising a fixed lower section and separate upper sections for each lance, each upper section together with its associated lance being movable into alignment with the fixed lower section. Two lances 1, 2 are held by carriages 15 which are suspended from winches 3, 4 mounted in a traversing carriage 6 which runs on rails 5. Each carriage 15 has an air or oxygen inlet pipe 7 and cooling water pipes 8. Depending from the carriage 6 are two upper guide sections 13, 14 which can accommodate the carriages 15. To lower a lance into the converter 9 through an orifice 10 in the converter flue 11, the carriage 6 is moved to align the relevant upper guide section with the fixed lower guide section 12. The guide sections (Fig. 4, are hollow and provided with rails 16 for rollers 17 mounted on the carriages 15. In installations comprising three lances per converter, the carriage 6 is provided with a third guide section and a third winch. In the case of four lances, two coupled carriages 6, 6<SP>1</SP> are employed, each carrying two lances.
