Abstract
967,098. Rotary piston internal combustion engines. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. June 27, 1962, No. 24728/62. Heading FIF. A rotary piston I.C. engine of the n and n+1 trochoidal type having a three or more-sided piston 2, Fig. 1, has at each corner in an axially extending groove 5, a composite sealing strip sealing against the piston running track 6 formed on the engine casing 1. The composite strip comprises strips 7, 8 located one behind the other in the peripheral direction of the piston with the strips 7, 8 having three and two strip portions respectively, Fig. 3, in the axial direction of the piston to allow each portion of the composite strip to move independently of other portions to permit the strip to conform to any curvature of the piston track that might take place in the axial direction due to uneven expansion or wear. The joints 9, in the strip 7, are staggered with respect to the joint 10 in the strip 8, with the gaps between the joints greater at the bottom of the groove 5 so that the strip portions easily adapt themselves to the curvature of the piston track. The strip portions may be urged radially outwards by springs.
