Abstract
Iron and steel surfaces are given a corrosion-resistant coating of barium ferrate, electrolytically, by immersing the surface as anode in an alkaline solution of a barium salt or barium hydroxide and applying at least 2 A.S.F. at 1.4 V. or more. The electrolyte is maintained at pH 12.5, by adding NaOH or KOH of 0.5-7.5 N to the barium hydroxide electrolyte. The coating of barium ferrate is preferably then treated with a dilute sodium dichromate. Barium salts used as starting materials are acetate, nitrate, chloride, or the oxide or hydroxide itself. The inert cathode may be carbon or platinum. U.S.A. Specification 2,850,416 is referred to.
