Abstract

966,018. Feeding webs. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 4, 1960 [Jan. 4, 1960], No. 262/60. Heading B6B. An electric control system for controlling a material treating machine and an associated uncoiling machine includes means for decelerating the treating machine in a predetermined manner when initiated by a decelerating initiating signal. As shown, metal strip 11 is uncoiled from an expansible mandrel 12 by pinch rollers 14 for supplying a slitting machine 13. The mandrel 12 is braked by an electrical generator 15. In operation, the leading end of a new strip coil is joined by welding to the trailing end of an expiring strip coil. As the end of the new coil is approached, deceleration of the slitting machine motor, not shown, by a control circuit, not shown, is initiated by the control system. The rolls 14 drive an electric digital counter 16 and a tacho-generator 17 while the mandrel 12 drives a second electric digital counter 18. The counter 16 applies a signal to the counter 18 on attaining a predetermined number Z, while counter 18 starts with an initial count of the predetermined number and counts down as the mandrel 12 rotates. The counter 18 feeds a signal to a digital-to-analogue converter 19 which applies an output voltage to a comparison device 20 also fed with a voltage from a tachometer generator 17 through a voltage squaring device 22 and potentiometer 21. When the voltage from the converter 19 falls below the voltage from the potentiometer 21, a relay 23 initiates the deceleration of the slitting machine motor, not shown. The potentiometer 21 is adjusted according to the thickness of the strip 11. In a modification (Fig. 1, Complete Specification, not shown) the counter 18 starts from zero and counts to the number Z to produce a signal causing the counter 16 to cease counting. The counter 16 then produces a signal applied to the converter 19 which is compared with a signal dependent on the square of the speed of material as described in the previous embodiment. Alternatively, the mandrel 12 and rolls 14 may drive tachometer generators to produce voltage signals or in the case of A.C. type generators the frequencies of the A.C. voltage may be compared.
