Abstract
965,680. Rear-view mirrors. RELIANCE TRANSPORT ELECTRICAL SERVICE (SHEFFIELD) Ltd. Feb. 15, 1962 [Feb. 21, 1961], No. 6363/61. Heading B7J. [Also in Divisions E2 and H4] Relates to an aerial pivotally mounted on the wing of a motor vehicle and comprising a cranked metal pillar 2 to which a rear-view mirror 1, Fig. 1, may be attached, the mounting being such that if the pillar is rotated on encountering an obstacle it can be restored to its original position automatically or manually. As shown in Fig. 2, the pillar 2 is rotatably mounted on a spigot portion 24 of a metallic member 3, the lower plane surface 26 of the pillar 2 is normally held in abutment with the upper plane surface 28 of the member 3 by means of spring washers 17 and a metal stud 15 secured to the lower end of the pillar 2, and a pair of annular rings 16 and 16A having cooperating cam surfaces are provided in angular recesses in the surfaces 26 and 28 so that when the pillar 2 is rotated on encountering an obstacle the pillar 2 rises against the action of the spring washers 17 which tend to restore the pillar to its original position when it disengages from the obstacle. During such motion electrical contact between the lower end of the stud 15 and a contact member 13 attached to the aerial feeder 13 is maintained without twisting the feeder by means of a helical spring 8A held under compression by an externally threaded sleeve 14 which is screwed into a sleeve 10 screwed into a threaded bore 8 in a base member 7 of insulating material, e.g. ebonite, attached to the vehicle by means of the sleeve 10 and look nuts.
