Abstract

854,885. Rear-viewing mirrors for vehicles. O'SHEI, W. E. Nov. 26, 1956 [Nov. 25, 1955], No. 27069/60. Divided out of 854,884. Class 103(2). [Also in Group XXV] A rear-viewing mirror comprises a stanchion 2, Fig. 1, rotatable about a base member 24 constituting part of or adapted to be secured to a vehicle body by a rotatable joint comprising the abutting surfaces at the foot 22 of the stanchion and at a recess 24a in the member 24. The surfaces are retained together by a leaf spring 28 secured at one end to the foot and at the other to a pin 30 which bridges a bore at a stem 24b of the member 24, the spring being located on the pin by collars 29 and being downwardly urged by a coil spring 29a in the stem. The parts of the joint are normally retained in a predetermined position about the axis of rotation by indexing means comprising fingers, plungers or balls 10 located in cavities 24c in the base member and outwardly urged by springs 11 to engage complementary recesses 22b in the lower face of the foot of the stanchion. An adjustable connection 3 on the stanchion supports the mirror element 1 and the leaf spring twists under a displacing force to allow the stanchion to turn relative to the base part, the resultant shortening of the spring producing a torsional force to restore the stanchion to its original indexed position. In a modification, a rubber bush 58, Fig. 2, bonded on its inner and outer surfaces to metal rings 58a, 58b, is mounted within the stem of the base 54 and has flats (not shown) on the outer ring to engage corresponding flats within the bore to prevent relative station therebetween and similar flats on the inner surface of the inner ring engage corresponding flats on the stem 52b of the stanchion which projects into the bore. The lower end 52a of the stanchion rotatably fits within a circular recess 54a in the base part 54 so that turning of the stanchion relative to the base part applies torsion to the rubber bush which tends to return the parts to the initial indexed position. The indexing means comprise fingers, plungers or balls 10 in cavities 52c provided in the lower end 52a which are urged by springs 11 into engagement with corresponding recesses 54c in the base part. The stanchion may be constructed of closely wound helical spring 52d as described in Specification 848,073. Specifications 746,370 and 775,594 also are referred to.
