Abstract

964,928. Exciting dynamo-electric machines. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 5, 1963 [June 20, 1962], No. 23780/62. Heading H2A. The power output of a D.C. traction generator is made to closely approach the ideal constant power characteristic by having two field windings 8, 9 with one, 8, separately excited and the other, 9, connected in shunt with the generator and in series with an auxiliary voltage source. The auxiliary voltage source comprises a resistor supplied from the rectified output of inductor alternator 2. Tapping points on the resistor are connected through diodes A, B, C to one side of field winding 9 and diode A is connected in the opposite sense to the other. At low current requirements, e.g. at starting, diode A conducts and the field produced by winding 9 bucks that of winding 8 to reduce the effective field in the machine. As the motors accelerate a higher voltage is required and the current passing through diode A decreases and diodes B, C become successively conducting. The inductor alternator also supplies the auxiliaries at T3, T4 and the energization for field 8.
