A D.C. generator having a drooping characteristic for welding, has split poles A comprising saturated main poles A<SP>1</SP> producing a constant flux and auxiliary poles A<SP>2</SP> whose flux is reduced or reversed by armature reaction, a field winding J being connected across the load F which is fed through a ballast resistor E. The machine has a shunt winding H and may be additively or subtractively series compounded by means of a winding K in parallel with the ballast resistor as shown, or by a simple series winding. Separate windings may be provided on the poles A<SP>1</SP> A<SP>2</SP> and an auxiliary brush may be employed. Specifications 421,734, 495,779, 503,155, 534,016, 546,084 and 555,997 are referred to.
