Abstract

Lids or covers for heat sealing to containers are formed from a sheet of cardboard or pasteboard by the steps of: perforating or partially severing a displaceable flap in each area of the sheet where a lid is to be formed; coating one or both sides of the sheet with wax to render it air-tight and liquid-tight; treating at least part of each area with a heat-sealing adhesive; and cutting out the lids from the sheet. Each lid area on the sheet may previously be printed on the face opposite to that on which the adhesive is applied. The steps of coating and applying adhesive may be combined, in which case the adhesive is applied as a complete coating. The adhesive, which may be polystyrene or polyvinyl acetate, may be applied as a solvent, an emulsion, a hot melt or an extrusion coating.
