Abstract

964,607. Rolling. SCHLOEMANN A.G. April 18, 1962 [April 20, 1961], No. 15127/62. Heading B3M. [Also in Division G4] The rolls of a rolling mill are adjusted to avoid tension or compression in the stock passing between a pair of stands by measuring the speed of the leading end of the stock as it emerges from the first stand and the speed of the trailing end as it is drawn into the second stand and comparing them. Adjustments are made to make both speeds the same. In the form shown the speed of the leading end emerging from stand 1 is measured by gating clock pulses from a source 17 into a counter 15 during the interval between the time the leading end passes a photo-cell 10 and the time it passes a photo-cell 11. The speed of the trailing end being drawn into stand 6 is measured in the same way using the interval between the times at which the photo-cells 10 and 11 are uncovered. The two counts may be compared visually and adjustment made to the speed and/or pressure of the rolls 2 and 3 or rolls 8 and alternatively the comparison and control may be effected automatically. Instead of using photo-cells 10 and 11 the speed of the end emerging from stand 1 may be measured by counting pulses over the interval between the surges of current which accompany the entry of the end of the stock between the rolls 2 and 3 of stand 1 and subsequently between the rolls 7 and 8 of stand 6. The trailing end speed is similarly obtained from the times of sudden drops in current as the billet leaves stand 1 and then stand 6. In a further modification a measuring roller between the stands, pulses being counted during a revolution of the measuring roller.
