Abstract

1419814 Automatic control of rolling mills GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 28 June 1973 [28 June 1972] 30775/73 Heading G3R In a multi-stand rolling mill, the roll gap of a stand is adjusted according to the deviation from a desired value of the measured power to a drive motor of the preceding stand. As shown, the power to a drive motor e.g. DM3 for stand R3 is measured as the slab SL passes through stand R3 only, and as it is threaded through stands R3 and R4. Any difference in power controls the screwdowns SD4 of stand R4, after a delay, to reduce the difference, and thus the interstand tension or compression, to an acceptable level. The power to motor drive DM4 of stand 5 is similarly controlled by gap adjustment of stand R5. The roll force in stand R3 is measured by load cell LC3 and compared with a predicted value, any error also being used to control the screwdowns of stand R4, with similar control of the roll-gap of stand R5 by the measured roll force in stand R4. The time of travel of the slab between roughing stand R2 and stand R3 is measured by thermal sensors T1, T2 to vary the pre-set gap of stand R3 and the gain of screwdown control circuits 61, 62 of stands R4, R5, thus compensating for changes in slab temperature due to differing threading times. The stand motors DM3 to DM5 are constant speed motors, and the screwdown drives may be SCRs. In an alternative Fig. 2 (not shown) the control of the stands may be by a digital computer using the above measured parameters and given equations.
