964,277. Laminates. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 10, 1960], No. 35200/61. Heading B5N. A laminated heat-insulating covering is formed about an object by applying successive layers of thick and thin metal foils of the same metal about the object and oxidizing the assembly, at elevated temperature and in a high pressure atmosphere of CO 2 , such that the thin foils are completely converted to oxide between the thick foils. The object may be a component of a nuclear reactor and the metals used may be aluminium, magnesium or zirconium or other poor neutron absorber. The oxidation temperature range may be 350- 525‹ C. and the pressure range of the CO 2 atmosphere may be 15-60 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> The thickness ranges of the thick and thin foils may be 0.1-0.5 mm. and 0.01-0.1 mm. respectively. Examples describe the winding of magnesium or aluminium foils, of 0.15 mm. and 0.03 mm. thickness respectively, alternately about an object in helical form and opposite directions, sealing the assembly by winding over it a ribbon of zirconium welded at its ends, and subjecting the whole to a temperature of 500 ‹ C. or 450‹ C. in a CO 2 atmosphere at 60 or 25 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> The invention is also applicable to assemblies of flat foils or plates.
