Dec. 16, 1959 [Dec. 20, 1958], No. 42731/59 Class 39(4) A fuel element for a heterogeneous nuclear reactor comprises a tubular can of stainless steel having a thickness between 0.08 and 0.16 mm. In use the can is deformed by the pressure of the coolant and is held pressed against the fuel under all circumstances. The fuel may consist of slugs of uranium oxide which may be shaped as shown in Fig. 2 in order to prevent axial movement; alternatively slugs may have slightly different diameters from their neighbours. To contain fission gases, the slugs may have central channels, or spaces may be provided at the ends of the cans.
