Abstract
1,072,326. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 8, 1964 [Sept.27,- 1963], No. 36762/64. Heading G6C. An end closure for fuel elements which are stacked vertically on one another in a reactor channel, comprises a hollow magnesium or magnesium alloy plug 2 welded to the fuel element sheath G, and an end-piece 4a (or 4b) attached within the hollow plug, one end of the hollow plug bearing on the fuel end face, and one end face of the end piece abutting an adjacent end piece of the next fuel element; adjacent contacting end piece faces are made concave and convex to achieve self-centring in the fuel channel. The contacting end faces between the end pieces and the associated plug, and between the plug and fuel are preferably all corrugated. The end piece is secured in the hollow plug by a screw-threaded sleeve 7 which engages a thread 8 in the hollow plug; in a modification, these two members are secured by an elastic ring which engages in peripheral grooves in the hollow plug inner wall and the end piece peripheral surface.
