Abstract
A compound of tin and niobium having the structure Nb3Sn is prepared in the form of at at least one continuous layer in a fabricated article by (a) assembling a composite rolling slab comprising a layer of tin between layers of niobium or of a layer of tin between a layer of niobium and a layer of any metal, e.g. copper, which will not interfere with the reaction between tin and niobium, (b) cold-rolling the slab into a sheet, (c) forming the sheet into an article of desired shape and (d) heating the article at between 650 DEG C. and 1150 DEG C. The rolling slab may consist of a sheet of tin at least partially enclosed by a sheet of niobium. Preferably the edges of the niobium sheet overlap, as in Fig. 1 (not shown). Alternatively the slab may consist of a layer of tin powder between sheets of niobium, thin sheets of niobium and tin between sheets of niobium or a compatible metal, or tin sheet or powder bounded on one side by a sheet of niobium and on the other by a sheet of a compatible metal.
