Abstract

964,104. Fluid-pressure braking. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. July 21, 1961 [Aug. 11, 1960], No. 27803/60. Heading F2F. A fluid pressure braking apparatus comprises a brake pipe 12 and a brake valve device 11 which includes a variable choke 23 arranged to regulate the pressure in an equalising reservoir 20 under the control of the device 11 and thereby vary the pressure in the brake pipe 12 and effect brake application on release, the variable choke comprising a graduated obturator 24, suitably tapered or stepped, which is arranged to be displaceable within a port 25 connectible with the equalising reservoir 20. In the construction shown, the obturator possesses valve seats 30, 34 and is secured to the armature of a lock-out electromagnet 32 so that, in normal use, the electromagnet is energized and valve seat 34 seals aperture 25 by seating ring 33. Spindle 28 of brake handle 29 carries a switch 15 which controls an exhauster choke magnetic valve 14 and a contactor unit 16 which provides an appropriate braking code. A cam 27 is also attached to spindle 28 which, if the electromagnet is de-energized, is engaged by end 40 of obturator 24 thus opening port 25 and allowing air to leak into brake pipe 12 and thus apply the brakes. A further cam 43 carried by spindle 28 normally closes a poppet valve 42 which, when the brake handle 29 is thrown into the emergency brake position is opened. The pneumatic system also comprises an exhauster pump 13, a snifter valve 41, an air admittance valve 21, a code unit 17 for detecting the degree of braking required from a three-wire system, a change-over valve 19 and brake cylinder 18.
