The capacitance on the earthed side of a capacitive voltage divider C 1 , C 2 , C 3 , which is connected to an inductive medium-voltage circuit to provide a capacitive voltage transformer, is made up of two condensers C 2 , C 3 in series, with a self-quenching spark gap F in parallel with one of them. The medium voltage circuit comprises a transformer T, with or without a choke L 1 in series therewith. R 1 represents the loss resistance of choke and transformer. The arrangement prevents the development of an undesirable state of oscillation associated with high voltages and leading capacitive currents. Resistances or chokes may be connected in series with the spark gap. The advantages of an arrangement in which the capacitor stack is mounted on a casing carrying the medium voltage circuit and the spark gap are discussed, and a mathematical analysis is included.
