Abstract

1,220,247. Voltage transformers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 12 Sept., 1969 [16 Sept., 1968], No. 43928/68. Heading H2H. Ferro-resonant oscillations in a capacitive voltage transformer are suppressed by connecting a damping impedance across an intermediate electromagnetic transformer. A capacitive voltage transformer comprises serially connected capacitors across one of which is connected an inductive transformer 12 feeding a load 15. Ferro-resonant oscillations which may be set up in the device are detected by a tuned circuit 23, 24, connected across part of the primary winding 11, to produce a signal which is applied to the gate electrode of a semi-conductor switch 21 of the bidirectional type, thereby rendering the switch 21 conductive to connect a resistor 20 across part or all of the primary winding 11 of the transformer 12 socausing the oscillations to be damped. Alternatively the damping resistor and the tuned circuit may be connected across all or part of the same winding or different windings of the transformer 12.
