963,033. Power steering. ELECTRO - HYDRAULICS Ltd., and CONVEYANCERRAYMOND Ltd. June 7, 1961 [June 9, 1960], No. 20610/61. Heading B7H. Power-assisted steering for an electric motor propelled truck, has an hydraulic torque amplifier 37 mechanically coupled to steering wheel 11, the output of the amplifier being conveyed by linkage 41, 46-51 to steer at wheels 54, 64 through different angles, and an electric motor 69 controlled by switch 26, driving a pump 43 to provide hydraulic pressure to amplifier 37. The wheels 54, 64 can be steered manually via shafts 34, 41 with amplifier 37 inoperative ; but on raising of a plunger 15 carried by the stearing- wheel 11, a lever 22 depresses rod 24 against spring 24a to close switch 26 to energize motor 69 to operate gear-type pump 43 to supply pressure fluid via valves 74, 36 to torque amplifier 37. On rotation of the steering wheel 11, valve 36 directs fluid to operate amplifier 37 for power steering, otherwise the fluid flows back to reservoir 45. Operation of a lever 71 energizes motor 69 and operates a valve 74 to direct pressure fluid to rams 77 to operate, for example, loading mechanism on the vehicle.
