Abstract

1400634 Power-assisted steering mechanism COVENTRY CLIMAX ENGINES Ltd 15 Jan 1974 [15 Jan 1973] 2335/73 Heading B7H The degree of assistance provided by a power assisted steering system in a vehicle is varied in accordance with changes in the load carried by the steerable wheel of the vehicle. In a rear wheel steer fork lift truck where the load on the steerable wheels is reduced when the truck is carrying a load, a pump 17 supplying a steering valve 15 which controls a steering ram 14 is driven by an electric motor 17 connected to a thyristor speed controller 18 which receives a control signal proportional to the load carried by the forks from a sensor 19 and reduces the speed of the motor 17 as the load on the forks increases. The speed controller 18 also receives a control signal from the controller 13 of a traction motor 12 and reduces the speed of the motor 17 as the speed of the truck increases.
