In a pneumatic elevator for raising material from a hopper 8 through an upleg duct 1 to a separator 2 which discharges material tangentially through an outlet 3, the radially inner air outlet 4 of the separator is connected by a duct 5 to a fan 6 in a closed circuit which returns the air through a downleg duct 7 to the lower end of the elevator duct 1. A curved shield 9 in the separator prevents direct flow of material to the outlet duct 4.
