Abstract

A metal body such as a contact for a semi-conductor device is produced by plating a metal base such as Mo, W, or Ta with a Group VIII metal, sintering, plating with gold and again sintering. Preferably the Group VIII metal is Ni or Co and the plating of such metal and sintering may be effected one or more times and then followed one or more times by gold plating and sintering. As described the metal base is cleaned chemically or electrolytically to give an oxide-free surface and then both metals are plated out by electrolysis, the Group VIII metal being Ni from a Watts bath and gold being plated from a bath containing per litre 17 gms. of each of potassium gold cyanide, potassium cyanide and sodium pyrophosphate, and sintering is effected by heating at 800 DEG C. in hydrogen.
