Abstract

1,257,796. Electro-forming porous articles. DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd. Aug. 15, 1969 [Aug. 16, 1968], No.39181/68. Heading C7B. An article comprising porous metal and having at least one contoured surface is formed by assembling a porous substrate having the configuration of the article to be made, the substrate being, or having been rendered conductive, with at least one former having a non-conductive contoured surface corresponding to the contoured surface of the article, and electrolytically depositing metal on the pores of the substrate in a plating bath. The porous substrate may be felted material, natural sponge or synthetic resin foam. The substrate may be made conducting by inclusion of graphite or powdered metal or by chemical deposition of metal in the pores. The metal to be electro-deposited may be silver, copper, nickel or iron. Alloys may be formed by direct plating or by successive deposition of different metals followed by heat treatment. The article may be heated to ash out the porous substrate material. The substrate may be cut from a porous block by means of a hot wire and rendered conducting, the remainder of the block then serving as the former.
