Abstract

1283192 Porous wicks; coating with metals DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 19 Nov 1969 [22 Nov 1968] 55426/68 Headings C7F and C7X A wick comprises an anisotropic metal reticulated foam. The material may be made anisotropic by non-uniform compression (e.g. by rolling or pressing between surfaces), optionally after annealing to facilitate compression. The original porous body may be made by spraying, dipping or electro-deposition of a metal (e.g. Ag, Cu, Ni, Fe or alloys thereof) on a reticulate porous substrate (e.g. reticulated polyurethane foam). The substrate may be retained or removed by heating. In the coating step the substrate may be made to contain a conductive material (e. g. metal or graphite powder), the surface may be coated with a curable resin incorporating a conductive additive, or with a metal by chemical reduction of a metal salt (e.g. ammoniacal AgNO 3 ). For electroless plating the surface may be sensitized with SuCl 2 and then PdCl 2 prior to Ag deposition.
