Abstract

An impact medium for use in mechanical plating comprises a mixture of spheroidal and non-spheroidal vitreous particles, a major part, at least, of the surface area of the non-spheroidal particles consisting of plane surfaces. The non-spheroidal particles are preferably polygonal in cross-section and their plane surfaces and their edges smooth to the touch. The latter particles may comprise between 5 and 80% of one volume of the mixture and may be of a size between 0.03 and 0.75 inch. The spheroidal particles may be of a size between 0.006 and 0.35 inch.ALSO:An impact medium for use in mechanical plating comprises a mixture of spheroidal and non-spheroidal vitreous particles, a major part, at least, of the surface area of the non-spheroidal particles consisting of plane surfaces. The spheroidal particles may be of a size between 0.006 and 0.35 inch. Copper plated ferrous articles may be plated with zinc, cadmium, tin, silver, gold, brass, bronze, or alloys of these by tumbling the articles in a barrel with a mixture of the impact medium, the required coating metal powder and water.
