Abstract

A reinforced plastic tape comprises a tape of gelled plasticised polyvinyl chloride having a longitudinally embedded ribbon of substantially parallel continuous filaments of which each filament is coated with the plasticised polyvinyl chloride, (PVC), the weight of the latter being at least equal to that of the filaments. Specified filaments are viscose rayon, nylon and polyester. The tape may be manufactured by running a ribbon of substantially parallel continuous filaments through a channel supplied with a dispersion of polyvinyl chloride in a liquid plasticiser, then through a pair of mangle rollers to control the quantity of adherent dispersion and finally through a heated zone to gel the dispersion. The tapes may be cured by heating, or may be woven to form a fabric of which the warp and weft have no twist, and then heated to melt and cure the PVC to form a continuous sheet or one having perforations corresponding to interstices in the fabric. The gelled sheets may be impregnated with plasticized PVC before curing. Alternatively, two or more tapes may be twisted together to form a thread from which a fabric may be woven with or without other threads. Plasticizers mentioned are phthalate and phosphate esters, e.g. dioctyl phthalate and tritolyl phosphate. Three specific examples are given.
