Abstract

795,924. Non-metallic tubes. MICROCELL, Ltd., and KREMER, H. June 27, 1955 [July 9, 1954], No. 20211/54. Class 99(2). In a process for making a tube which is reinforced with or made from a tape or web consisting of slivers, rovings, threads or yarns of glass fibre coated and/or impregnated with thermoplastic material, the glass-fibre-reinforced plastic is made in the form of a cord or rope and subsequently flattened into the form of a tape or web by passage between heated rollers. The material may be polystyrene, polythene, nylon or polytetrafluoroethylene, or vinyl plastics including polyvinyl chloride, vinylidene polymers and copolymers of these compounds with other materials, or cellulosic plastics including cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate and ethyl cellulose, and natural or synthetic rubber. Two or more tapes may be helically and oppositely wound in superimposed relation, the helices being welded together by the application of heat and pressure ; consecutive turns of each tape overlap.
