Abstract

614,800. Extrusion apparatus. B. X. PLASTICS, Ltd., and NICHOLAS, D. C. July 30, 1946. No. 22727. [Class 87 (ii)] Extrusion apparatus for making rods, strips, threads, &c., of thermoplastic material, e.g. plasticised polyvinyl chloride, rubber and rubber-like materials, comprises a rotatable feed screw 8 and an extrusion die 11 or 17 integral with or rigidly attached to the feed screw and extending through a cap 4 fitted to the end of a cylinder 2. In Fig. 1 the cap 4 has a conical bore 6 and the shaft of the feed screw is extended to form a conical portion 9, the material passing through the annular space 10 between the portions 9, 6 and through conduits 13 into the bore 14 of the die. The rods, &c., will be twisted as they are drawn out of the die. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2, a central bore 16 is provided through the shaft 8 and die member 17 for the passage of a core or mandrel such as a cable 18 therethrough ; eccentrically of the bore 16 there is an extrusion orifice 19 and thus an extruded thread or strip 20 will. be wound helically upon the cable, the pitch of the winding being adjustable by variation in the speed of either the cable or the die. Any number of extrusion orifices may be provided in the die member so as to produce a number of rods, &c., intertwined togther, and the apparatus may be adapted to provide further extrusions, which may be of different colours, through the stationary cap 4 so as to bond onto the rotating extrusion produced by the die member.
