962,082. Force measuring devices. CARL SCHENCK MASCHINENFABRIK G. m.b.H. March 18, 1963 [March 20, 1962], No. 10655/63. Heading G1W. A force measuring member which may be formed from a cylindrical bar 1 (Figs. 1, 2) in which lateral recesses 2 are milled to provide a force transmitting portion 1a and a counterbearing portion 1b between which is a measuring portion 4 of smaller cross-section, defined by recesses 3, wherein strains and extension occur due to the "notch effect". Bores 5, 6 are formed in the bar above and below the measuring portion the axes of which intersect the longitudinal axis of the bar and which serve to influence the force transmitting conditions between member 1 and the portion 4 in such a manner that a "bending effect" is superimposed on the "notch effect" and a more continuous strain curve in the portion 4 and adjacent portions is produced. Strain gauges 7, which may be electrical, are attached in known manner to the recesses 3 and in addition strain gauges 8 are attached to the bores 5, 6.
