Abstract

1,125,326. Measuring force electrically. STATHAM INSTRUMENTS Inc. Sept. 28, 1966 [Oct. 19, 1965; March 23, 1966], No.43409/66. Heading G1N. A force transducer consists of a flexible beam 4, 4', Fig. 1, rigidly fixed at one end 4a to a block 3, and attached at the end 4a' to a rigid link 6, 7 which receives the input force from a rod 8, 15, the line of application of the force (i.e. the axis of the rod 8, 15) passing through a neck portion 5 of the beam 4, 4' of reduced section. At this neck a so-called stress reversal occurs. A pair of strain gauges (17, 17', Fig.2, not shown) is mounted on the portion 4' of the strip, and a further pair of strain gauges (16, 16') is mounted on the portion 4 of the strip, these pairs being subjected respectively to tension and compression when a force is applied to the rod 15 away from the transducer; and the gauges are connected in a bridge. The rod 8, 15 is supported by a diaphragm 10, and collars 14, 21 limit movement thereof. The transducer may be adapted to measure pressure, Figs.4, 5 (not shown) and weight Fig. 6 (not shown).
