In an apparatus for densifying powdered materials aerated powdered material is fed to a hopper 16, wherein a sealing head of 22 inches is maintained, and thence along a horizontal side feed chamber 17 to between the top and second flights of a feed screw 20 in a vertical conical chamber 19, the apex and discharge of which is at the bottom, the upper third of the interior surface of the chamber 19 being adapted so that the aerated powdered material does not freely spin against said interior surface, e.g. by having a roughened surface, Fig. 3 (not shown), or having the inner surface as a filter plate 53 connected to a vacuum manifold 52, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the lower two-thirds of the interior surface of the chamber being very highly polished. A vacuum manifold 25 is connected across the wide mouth of the chamber 19 having in it a filter plate 26 so that air may be removed from the powdered material. The material is fed compacted and deaerated to a pair of pressure densifying rolls 29 which are corrugated, the longitudinal depressed portions of one corresponding to the undepressed portions of the other, and enclosed in an air-tight jacket 31 having an air nozzle 32 feeding in conditioned air which aids the movement of the stream of material from the rolls 29 to a granulator 34. When the material has been densified it is blown into a hopper 36 and thence through a filter mechanism 40, 41 which removes fines and returns them to the hopper 16.
