A water-cooled rotary internal combustion engine or compressor comprises a cylindrical rotor with eight or more blocks 1 of sickleshaped cross-section mounted in arcuate channels in the circumference of the rotor. The inner surface of the housing is of sinusoidal form so that the ends of the blocks are always close to the surface, and form working chambers which vary in volume as the rotor rotates. In the case of the internal combustion engine, mixture enters at 15, 16, is ignited by sparking plugs at 19, 20 and is exhausted at 17, 18. When operated as a compressor, only four blocks need be used, the spaces between the blocks also forming working chambers.
