961,423. Making valve bags. BRITISH VISQUEEN Ltd. April 4, 1962 [April 28, 1961; Nov. 14, 1961; Dec. 6, 1961], Nos. 15459/61, 40699/61 and 43703/61. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] A valve is formed in the wall of a bag of thermoplastic material by an aperture 2, 8 covered, internally or externally, by a patch 3. In the arrangement shown the patch is welded on the outside of the wall at 4, 5, 6 and a thinner flap 10 is welded inside along the line 9. In an alternative arrangement, where the patch 3 is inside the bag, the flap 10 is welded near the edge 7 of the patch 3. The wall 8 of the aperture may be curved or formed with slits parallel to the weld 5, similar slits being formed in the patch 3 when this is arranged internally. The edge 7 of an external patch may be curved convexly towards the opening 2, 8. The flap 10 may be spot welded at spaced points to the wall of the bag to prevent the patch falling back on itself. The bag may be formed from a web of lay-flat tubing welded transversely, the weld 30 adjacent the valve being made only after the valve has been constructed. The bag may be of polythene or polyvinyl-chloride film, preferred thicknesses being suggested in the Specification. The patch 3 is preferably of similar material but the flap 10 is thinner. The bag may, however, be formed by stitching or gluing. An insert of P.T.F.E. may prevent undesired welds when the valve is being welded.
