Abstract
961,294. Feeding webs. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH) Ltd. June 15, 1961 [March 17, 1960], No. 9425/60. Heading B6B. A feed roller 14 is driven through differential gearing by a driving shaft 26, the differential gearing being adjustable, by movement of a tension member 17, in response to variations in length of a web loop, to adjust the speed of the roller 14. The feed roller 14 is freely mounted on a shaft 23 and carries a sun gear 28 in mesh with planet gears 29 mounted in a yoke 31 secured to the shaft 23. The gears 29 engage a ring gear 32 having external ratchet teeth 33 for engagement with a pawl 34 and a spring-loaded looking pawl 36 which holds the gear 32 when not being driven by the pawl 34. The pawl 34 is pivotally mounted on an arm 37 connected by a link 38 to one of a pair of arms 18 carrying the roller 17. A shield 39, Fig. 1 (not shown) normally prevents engagement of the pawl 34 with teeth 33. The roller 14 cooperating with a roller 13 normally feeds a slightly insufficient length of web 11 to intermittently driven rollers 22, such that the loop around roller 17 decreases, thereby causing pawl 34 to move beyond the end of the shield 39. The pawl 34 then rotates the ring gear 32 to increase the speed of roller 14. Alternatively, a solenoid energized by a switch operated by arms 18 may actuate the arm 37.
