Abstract
961,182. Continuous casting-machines. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and CONTINUOUS CASTING CO. Ltd. Sept. 12, 1960 [June 12, 1959], No. 20255/59. Heading B3F. Predetermined lengths are continuously cast vertically and held in a holding zone immediately below the mould for a time to enable the cast length to solidify sufficiently for handling in a horizontal disposition, after which it is removed from said zone and manipulated to a horizontal disposition. A series of slab moulds 11 are served by a travelling ladle 12, casting being carried out cyclically through the plant so that one manipulator mounted on a carriage 31 may serve all the casting bays. Each predetermined length of casting is cast on to the end of a starter bar 20 carried by a vertically movable table 19. The casting is held below the mould while cooling by rolls 17a, from which it is transferred by hydraulic ram mechanism 22, Fig. 4, while in the vertical position, to the manipulator which supports it in a cradle 47 by jaws 46. The cradle is moved transversely of the manipulator carriage and rotated to bring the casting into a horizontal position and above a conveyer 51 on which the casting is deposited. The manipulator is then reset for the next operation and driven on the carriage 31 on rails 33 to the next casting bay with a casting ready for handling.
