Abstract

812,356. Continuous-casting machines. STOKOWIEC, Z., KOSARSKI, Z. Z. J., and SHEEPBRIDGE ALLOY CASTINGS Ltd. Sept. 24, 1956 [June 24, 1955], No. 18394/55. Class 83 (1). A method of casting non-ferrous bars, tubes, &c. comprises gravity - feeding molten metal into one end of a die which is heat-insulated, whereas the other end of the die is at a temperature to cause the metal to solidify, and applying step-bystep movement to the solidified metal so that there is a stationary period and a movement period, controlling the rate of the step-by-step movement and the rate of the extraction of heat so that the skull, which is formed in the heat-insulated end of the die during the stationary period, is 'broken down during the movement period when further molten metal enters the die under gravity. A holding furnace 11, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a die-holder 13 of graphite, copper or copper-alloy, and having a water jacket 14 at its outlet end. The cast bar 6 is extracted by rollers 20-23 driven by an electric motor, started and stopped at intervals, e.g. by a clockwork mechanism or by means responsive to the temperature of the casting. The bar may be additionally cooled by water sprays adjacent the outer end of the die. Hollow sections may be cast by inserting a graphite mandrel 37 in the graphite die 38, Fig. 5. In a modification, a crucible is supported within a heating chamber, the die-holder extending through the walls of both. In a further modification, Figs. 6 and 7, the step-by-step movament of the casting is imparted by an hydraulic motor 42, which reciprocates a carriage 45 running on rails 47. On the carriage is mounted an hydraulic gripping device comprising jaws 50 actuated through linkwork by a pneumatic motor 60. The motors 42, 60 are provided with changeover valve mechanism controlled by a clockwork timer, so that after a predetermined time of solidification in the die, the motor 60 closes the jaws 50 on the bar, and the motor 42 causes the carriage to move away from the die, drawing the solidified metal therefrom. After a predetermined length of movement the valves are actuated by a knock-off plate so that the jaws 50 open and the carriage returns towards the die for the next operation, determined by the clockwork mechanism. The step-by-step motion may be controlled by the variation in temperature of the bar by the use of a thermo-couple.
