Abstract

961,168. Sifting apparatus. H. C. ANDREWS. Sept. 5, 1960, No. 30549/60. Heading B2H. A sifting barrel which is simultaneously rotated about its axis and given a rocking motion consists of a number of separate sifting panels 5 mounted in a cage structure formed by end rings 1, 2 interconnected by parallel columns 3. Gaps 13, Fig. 3, are provided between the edges of adjacent panels, and the leading edge of each panel overlaps the trailing edge of the adjacent panel. The barrel is supported in an inclined position, and the end rings are each supported on three rollers. The central roller is either eccentric in shape or is so positioned relative to the outer rollers that when the barrel is rotated it is caused to rock continuously from side to side. A lesser rocking effect can be obtained by eliminating one of the centre rollers. Each panel is mounted under tension between two transverse spindles 15, 16 connected to the end rings. The panel supports include wires or hooks 17 and wires 18, the latter passing through holes in the members 16 and being tensioned by springs 19. The barrel is rotated by a shaft 11 connected to the end ring 2 through a flexible joint; material is fed to the barrel through the ring 1 and flows towards the opposite ring.
