Abstract

An electrical contact 2 is cut from sheet metal and mounted in an insulating block 40, so as to make contact with a similar contact in a second block. The element comprises a contact finger 18, and a shorter contact plate 20 extending in the same direction from a common web 4, the finger 18 having an end portion 26 diverging outwardly on the contact's longitudinal axis, and the plate having a middle portion 32 directed inwardly of the said axis, and a contact ramp 34, extending from the middle portion 32 and diverging outwardly. The contact plate 20 carries a spring detent 36 to engage a shoulder 72, in the cavity 46, and the end portion of the finger 18 has an outwardly directed contact surface 28, to make contact with the ramp 34 of the other similar contact. Attached to the web 4 there are also walls 6, 8, 10 and 12, wall 12 being used to grip the insulation of the incoming lead 16, and wall 10 being used to crimp the bared conductor. The insulating blocks have flanges 42 which act as polarizing and keying means and are described in Specification 960,996. Cavities 46 for receiving the contacts extend through the block so that the side walls 6 and 8 and the web 4 of the contact each bear against a wall of cavity 40, Fig. 4 (not shown). The wall 56 of the cavity has a groove 60 for guiding the free end 36 during the insertion of element 2. The cavities 46 are arranged as described in the above-mentioned Specification. Each contact is recessed with respect to the mating faces of the block and so there is a long insulating path between adjacent contacts and consequently a high break-down voltage.
