The feeler pin 2 of a gauge has an abutment 18 with an edge 18a perpendicular to the pin axis, which engages an involute cam 20 on a lever 19 provided with a toothed sector 19a to drive pinion 23 of the axle 24 of an indicating needle 25 through gearing 22, 23. A gearwheel 27, acted on by a spring, engages pinion 23 so that if the lower end of the feeler pin receives an upwardly directed impact the abutment 18 is raised from the cam 20 and the following movement of cam 20 is delayed by gear 27 to prevent damage.
