Abstract

A process for the production of solid, self-drying olefine copolymers comprises polymerizing propylene or butene-1 with isoprene in the presence of a solvent and of an aluminium halide as catalyst, the catalyst being used in 2.4x10-3 to 3.2x10-3 moles per mole of monomer in the case of propylene or 2.4x10-3 to 3.6x10-3 moles per mole of monomer in the case of butene, the mole ratio of isoprene to mono-olefine being between 0.6:1 and 0.9:1 and the reaction being such that the yield of polymer is between 8 and 35% Specified reaction ingredients are aluminium chloride, bromide or chlorobromide as catalyst, alkyl chloride or aliphatic hydrocarbon as solvent, and methanol as catalyst deactivator and as polymer precipitant. Preferably the reactants and solvent are anhydrous. The self-drying products find application in paints, varnishes and lacquers.
