Abstract

959,469. Ventilating vehicles. S. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd. June 1, 1961, No. 19884/61. Heading F4V. In a vehicle heating and ventilating apparatus comprising an air inlet compartment 4, a heater 11, valve means 15a and 15b for controlling the proportions of air by-passing and/or passing over the heater, a main outlet duct 12b and an auxiliary outlet duct 18 respectively supplying outlet pipes 66 and a demister nozzle 25, the valves 15a and 15b are operated by actuating means arranged over a part of its movement simultaneously to apply an opening moment to one of the valves and a closing moment to the other. The actuating means comprises a cable 69 attached at 72 to a member 73 which is rotatable about an axis 74 and is formed with a cam track shaped to provide a rapid fall and rise 80 and a more gradual rise and fall 81. The cam track is engaged by a roller 83 mounted at the end of an arm 84 fixed to a spindle 85 to which the valve 15a is also secured. A spindle 75 to which the valve 15b is fixed is also fixed to a lever arm 77 connected by a link 78 to a pivot pin 79 secured to the member 73. Thus clockwise rotation of the member 73 tends first to close the valve 15b more tightly then valve 15a is quickly opened as the follower 83 is urged against the cam surface 80 by means of a spring 86 arranged around the pivot 85. Continued rotation of the cam then causes the valve 15b to open slowly and the valve 15a to close slowly. Each valve is provided with a resilient lining. The three remaining valves 21, 22 and 35 which control apertures between the inlet compartment 4 and auxiliary compartment 18, the main outlet compartment 12b and the auxiliary compartment, and the compartment 12b and outlet pipes 66 respectively are controlled by further actuating means (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) employing cam tracks for valves 21 and 22 and a lost motion device for valve 35. Valve 21 is first quickly opened then gradually closed while valve 22 is gradually opened, the lost motion being taken up during this process resulting in a final abrupt closing of valve 35. The sequence of valve movements is given in Figs. 8 to 13 (not shown). The apparatus is constructed in upper and lower parts 1a and 1b adapted to be mounted on opposite sides of a bulkhead and a fan 8 is located in the air inlet compartment 4.
