A ventilating device, e.g. for motor vehicles, comprises an air supply duct, shut-off means, and a deflecting grille adapted for orientation by rotation relative to the duct about the longitudinal axis of the latter, the shut-off means and the deflecting grille being assembled to form an outlet so fitted to the end of the duct that it may turn relative thereto. As shown, Figs. 1 and 2, inclined slats 1a of the deflecting grille 1 are mounted in a frame 1b comprising an ornamental ring 7 and a cylindrical part 8, which latter is extended in the form of diametrically opposite tongues 4 which support a spindle 3 on which a butterfly valve 2 pivots. The position of the butterfly valve is controlled by an arm 5 projecting between two of the slats 1a, an over-centre spring 6 holding the valve in either the closed or the open position. The grille 1 and valve 2 are free to rotate in a sleeve 9 and are retained in the latter by a spring 12 pivotally attached to a bridge-piece 11 on the sleeve 9. Springs 14 retain the assembly in the end of a duct 13. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, the valve comprises two flaps 2a, 2b, pivoted on a common shaft 3 and urged toward the open position 2<SP>1</SP>a, 2<SP>1</SP>b, by a spring 6c. A cam 15, connected by a spindle 16 to a control knob 16b, controls the setting of the flaps, any selected setting being maintained by the engagement of a " piano-wire " spring 17a with a grooved wheel 17 mounted on the spindle 16. Projections 19 on the grille frame 1b engage a circular groove 19a in the sleeve 9 to retain the grille and valve assembly while allowing it to rotate relative to the sleeve. The sleeve 9 is held in a dashboard 18 by the springs 14, and connects the dashboard to the duct 13. Two units may be mounted in a dashboard, one for the driver, and the other for the passenger.
